Conques, on the Road of Saint Jacques de Compostelle.
 

Conques is an abbey that the Saracens destroyed and tht the hermit Dadon restored with the help of Louis le Débonnaire at that time the King of Aquitaine i about 800 AD. They understood the importance of the relics of Sainte Foy, the martyred Christian Virgin of Agen. This relics made the monastry of Conques one of the most important as far afield as Alsace, England and Spain. The abbot of Conques took up his position second only to the Bishop of the region.

Conques Abbey

The church of Conques is an historic building constructed in the 11th century to the serve as the church for the monastry. It is one of the most beautiful Roman buildings. One admires above all the wonderful decoration, the five absidioles, the three clocks and the dramatic sculpture showing the final Judgement.

One is able to see treasures crafted by ancient goldsmiths, the relics of Charlemagne and a statue encrusted in rubies of Sainte Foy.
